What Are Wisdom Runes?
Wisdom Runes are special experience-granting runes introduced in Dota 2 that spawn at strategic locations near the ancient camps. Unlike other runes, Wisdom Runes are specifically designed to help underleveled heroes catch up, making them crucial for support players and teams that need to recover from a difficult early game.

First spawn at 7:00, then every 7 minutes after
Wisdom Runes follow a predictable spawn pattern that makes them easy to plan around. The first rune spawns at exactly 7:00, giving both teams time to establish laning phase before the first contestable objective appears.

Radiant Wisdom Rune
Spawns in the jungle area near the Radiant ancient camp, positioned between the ancient camp and the mid lane. Easily accessible for Radiant supports rotating from safe lane.
Bottom-Right QuadrantDire Wisdom Rune
Spawns in the jungle area near the Dire ancient camp, positioned between the ancient camp and the mid lane. Easily accessible for Dire supports rotating from safe lane.
Top-Left QuadrantImportant Timing Note:
Both Wisdom Runes spawn simultaneously at each interval. This means teams must choose which rune to prioritize, or split up to contest both locations. The runes do not expire, so they can be saved for strategic moments if needed.
XP Mechanics and Scaling
The unique aspect of Wisdom Runes is their dynamic XP scaling. Rather than providing a fixed amount of experience, the rune's value adjusts based on game state, ensuring it remains relevant throughout the match.
How XP Scaling Works
The Wisdom Rune grants experience equal to approximately 1-2 creep waves worth of XP, scaled to the level of the lowest-level hero in the entire game. This means:
- Early game (7:00): Provides approximately 200-350 XP
- Mid game (14:00-21:00): Provides approximately 400-600 XP
- Late game (28:00+): Provides approximately 700-1000+ XP
Note: Exact values vary based on the lowest hero's level at spawn time. A support at level 6 will receive much less than a support at level 12.

Strategic Importance for Supports
Wisdom Runes are arguably the most important objective for support players in Dota 2. While carries farm lanes and jungle camps, supports often struggle to find safe farm. Wisdom Runes provide a reliable source of XP that can keep supports relevant throughout the game.
Why Supports Should Prioritize Wisdom Runes:
Level Catchup
Supports are typically 3-5 levels behind cores. Wisdom Runes help close this gap, ensuring you have access to crucial abilities and talents.
Power Spike Timing
Reaching level 6, 12, or 18 faster means accessing ultimate abilities and talents earlier, creating crucial power spikes for team fights.
Survivability
Higher levels mean more HP, armor, and magic resistance. This makes you harder to kill in ganks and team fights, increasing your map presence.
Ability Impact
Many support abilities scale with levels. Additional points in stuns, heals, and utility spells can swing team fights in your favor.
When to Prioritize Wisdom Runes
While Wisdom Runes are valuable, knowing when to contest them versus focusing on other objectives is crucial for optimal decision-making. Here's a priority framework:
High Priority Situations
- Support is Severely Underleveled: If you're 4+ levels behind the average, the Wisdom Rune is critical for catching up.
- Approaching Key Level Thresholds: When you're 1-2 creeps away from level 6, 12, or 18, the Wisdom Rune can secure your power spike immediately.
- Safe Access Available: When you have vision and can safely rotate to the rune without risking death or missing crucial plays.
- No Immediate Team Fight: If there's downtime between objectives and no towers or team fights happening, grab the rune.
- Enemy Team Not Contesting: If enemy supports are dead or showing on the opposite side of the map, it's a free pickup.
Medium Priority Situations
- Contested But Winnable: If both teams are rotating but you have vision and numbers advantage, you can fight for it.
- Core is Farming Nearby: Your carry can help secure the rune while farming ancients or nearby camps.
- Post-Fight Recovery: After winning a fight, grabbing Wisdom Runes helps your team consolidate the advantage.
Low Priority Situations (Skip the Rune)
- Tower Defense Needed: Never leave your team to defend a tower for a Wisdom Rune. Towers are worth more than the XP.
- Roshan is Being Taken: Roshan provides Aegis and team gold/XP. This is always more valuable than a single Wisdom Rune.
- Team Fight is Imminent: Your presence in a team fight provides more value than the XP from the rune.
- Deep Enemy Territory: If the enemy controls the area and you have no vision, attempting to take the rune will likely result in death.
- Enemy Carry is Splitpushing: Defending against a splitpush is more critical than securing XP.
Team Coordination and Communication
Wisdom Rune spawns create natural timing windows that teams should coordinate around. Here's how to maximize team efficiency:
Before the Spawn (6:30 - 7:00)
- Communicate Intent: Use chat wheel or voice to indicate you're rotating to the Wisdom Rune at 7:00.
- Establish Vision: Ward the approach paths to your Wisdom Rune spawn 30 seconds early to detect enemy rotations.
- Check Enemy Positions: Glance at the map to see if enemy supports are missing or rotating.
- Finish Current Task: Complete your pull, stack, or ward placement before rotating so you don't waste time.
At the Spawn (7:00)
- Secure Your Rune First: If uncontested, grab your team's rune quickly before considering invading the enemy's.
- Group for Invades: Don't solo invade for the enemy Wisdom Rune. Bring at least one teammate or have vision.
- Trade Safely: If both teams contest, sometimes it's better to trade runes (each team gets one) than risk dying for both.
- Protect Your Support: Cores should help supports secure Wisdom Runes, especially if the enemy is contesting.
After the Spawn (7:00 - 14:00)
- Don't Delay Using It: Wisdom Runes don't expire, but holding them too long means missing out on the immediate power spike.
- Save for Strategic Moments: If you're very close to a key level, you can save the rune and use it just before a fight.
- Set Timers for Next Spawn: Immediately note when the next Wisdom Rune spawns (7 minutes later) and plan accordingly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forgetting the Timing
Missing Wisdom Runes because you forgot they spawn at 7-minute intervals. Use audio timers or in-game alerts to remind yourself.

Dying to Secure the Rune
Trading your life for a Wisdom Rune is almost never worth it. Death gives the enemy team gold and map control, which outweighs the XP you gain.

Letting Carries Take It
Cores are already farming lanes and jungle for XP. Wisdom Runes provide relatively more value to underleveled supports.

Ignoring the Enemy's Rune
If you can safely steal or contest the enemy's Wisdom Rune, it denies their supports crucial XP while giving it to you - a double advantage.
Solution: After securing your rune, evaluate if you can safely invade for the enemy's rune.
No Vision Before Contesting
Walking into fog of war to grab a Wisdom Rune is a recipe for getting ganked. The enemy team knows when Wisdom Runes spawn too.

Abandoning Team for Rune
Leaving your team 4v5 during a crucial tower defense or team fight objective to grab a Wisdom Rune can cost you the game.

Position 5 Hard Supports
Heroes like Crystal Maiden, Lion, Shadow Shaman, and Witch Doctor
- You need levels the most - prioritize every Wisdom Rune
- Level 6 timing is critical for your ultimate abilities
- Higher levels increase your utility spell values and survivability
- Ask your team to help secure Wisdom Runes for you
Position 4 Roaming Supports
Heroes like Earthshaker, Mirana, Clockwerk, and Spirit Breaker
- You get more XP from roaming than pos 5, but still need Wisdom Runes
- Use Wisdom Runes to reach power spike levels faster
- Can sacrifice Wisdom Rune to pos 5 if they're more underleveled

Smoke Ganks Around Wisdom Rune Timing
Smart teams use Wisdom Rune spawns as bait for ganks. At 7:00, 14:00, and 21:00, enemy supports will likely rotate to their Wisdom Rune. A smoke gank can catch them rotating alone.
The Wisdom Rune Trap
- At 6:45, buy a smoke and group with 2-3 heroes
- Smoke toward the enemy Wisdom Rune location
- Wait in fog near the Wisdom Rune spawn
- When enemy support comes to grab it at 7:00, initiate
- Kill the support and steal their Wisdom Rune
Vision Control Around Wisdom Runes
Placing observer wards near Wisdom Rune spawns accomplishes multiple goals:
- Detects enemy rotations to contest the rune
- Provides vision of ancient camps for stacking
- Reveals enemy jungle movements near ancients
- Allows your team to contest safely with information advantage
Denying Enemy Wisdom Runes
Unlike some other runes, Wisdom Runes cannot be denied. However, you can deny the enemy access by controlling the area, forcing them to choose between dying and giving up the rune.
Comeback Mechanics
When your team is behind, Wisdom Runes become even more valuable. Securing all Wisdom Runes (both yours and the enemy's) can help your underleveled heroes catch up faster, creating opportunities to turn the game around.

7:00 Wisdom Rune
- Power Runes: Also spawn at 7:00 in the river. Coordinate to secure both.
- Bounty Runes: Spawn at 7:00 at outposts and river. Quick rotation opportunity.
- Tormentor: Not available yet (spawns at 20:00).
- Typical Game State: Laning phase transitioning to early fights.
14:00 Wisdom Rune
- Power Runes: Spawn at 14:00. Mid heroes often contest these.
- Bounty Runes: Spawn at 14:00. Supports should grab bounties and Wisdom.
- Typical Game State: Tier 1 towers falling, early team fights happening.
21:00 Wisdom Rune
