Dota 2 rune timings: Water, Power, Bounty, and Wisdom Shrines
The schedule tells you when to look. Lane priority, information, resources, route, allies, the revealed result, and the next useful action decide whether moving is worth it.
Reviewed August 28, 2026 for standard Dota 2 matches. Rune schedules, locations, effects, rewards, selection rules, Bottle behavior, Shrine collection, terrain, and alternate modes can change. Read the live clock, map, tooltips, and current client, then check Valve’s official Dota 2 updates after gameplay patches.
Dota 2 rune timing quick table
Standard sequence: Bounty at 0:00, Water at 2:00 and 4:00, Power from 6:00 every two minutes, Bounty every four minutes, and Wisdom Shrines from 7:00 every seven minutes. Use the live client for the current match.
The cue-cost-convert model
Cue
Name the next current window and the last moment when preparation can still change access.
Cost
Price the lane, farm, information, support job, health, mana, and position surrendered by moving.
Convert
Give the result a lane, fight, gank, farm, defense, denial, refill, or reset job, then leave.
Timing rule: a reminder should start a map check. It should never decide the route before the player sees the state.
Water Runes: prepare the 2:00 and 4:00 river windows
Water Runes are early-lane resource windows. Their value depends on current health, mana, Bottle state, lane position, support movement, vision, and what each hero loses by touching the river.
Before the window
Shape the wave, preserve the resource that makes the rune useful, watch support movement, and avoid taking avoidable damage just before leaving.
Choose the route
Compare both river approaches, current vision, movement speed, enemy spells, allied help, and whether the hero can return before the lane changes.
Use or deny
A safe denial, refill, resource reset, or information gain can matter even when the collecting hero does not immediately force an action.
Return on time
Name the creep, tower, experience, support task, or enemy movement that makes staying in the river more expensive than the rune.
Power Runes: create access before the reveal
The standard first Power Rune window is 6:00, followed by another window every two minutes. The clock does not reveal the identity, choose the side, or prove the route is safe.
- Prepare the lane. Push, hold, deny, bait, or preserve the wave according to the matchup and which hero can leave first.
- Bound both sides. Use wards, shown supports, summons, previous movement, high ground, and safe camera checks without pretending hidden information is known.
- Read the reveal as a job. Ask whether the current rune enables movement, survival, sustain, damage, concealment, illusions, spell use, a refill, denial, or only a safe reset.
- Convert proportionally. A valuable rune can justify a gank, lane pressure, farm acceleration, an objective setup, or no immediate fight at all.

Bounty Runes: treat the four-minute cue as an economy route
Who can take it cheaply?
Prefer a hero whose current route, safety, inventory, movement, and next job already pass near the rune.
What does enemy access cost?
Use current vision, missing heroes, teleports, nearby camps, lane pressure, and escape routes before entering hostile space.
Does waiting change value?
Patch 7.40 changed Bounty Rune gold to depend on creation time rather than activation time. Do not preserve an old “wait for more gold” rule.
What purchase or action follows?
Name the consumable, component, ward, buyback margin, delivery, lane, farm route, or team action the economy actually enables.
Wisdom Shrines: route for the building that replaced Wisdom Runes
Patch 7.38 removed Wisdom Runes and introduced Wisdom Shrines. In the standard schedule they first activate at 7:00 and continue every seven minutes. This is a building interaction with a collection period, not a rune pickup under a new name.
Assign the experience job
Identify which hero or team state changes meaningfully with the current experience and whether that hero can reach the Shrine without losing more elsewhere.
Secure the collection area
Use current vision, nearby lanes, Watcher state, terrain, health, mana, cooldowns, allies, and enemy response rather than walking in alone on the timer.
Read the contest
Patch 7.41 made opposing heroes reverse the collection countdown instead of merely pausing it. Position, numbers, control, and exit matter throughout the interaction.
Leave after the purpose is met
Return to the lane, protect another Shrine, farm, ward, reset, defend, or convert a favorable enemy movement before the team lingers.
Resolve overlapping rune and Shrine windows before they collide
One clock, several costs
Power and Bounty cycles can overlap; Shrine, lane, objective, stack, and item windows can pull the team elsewhere. List the choices before the cue.
Assign different owners
The mid hero, support, offlaner, summon, courier observer, or farming core can solve different information, collection, lane, and response jobs.
Choose the highest usable result
Prefer the window that changes a reachable next action at acceptable cost—not the one with the loudest reminder or most familiar route.
Trade what cannot be contested
When enemy access is stronger, take the lane, camp, vision line, other rune, opposite Shrine, structure pressure, or safe reset instead of donating heroes.
Use rune calls that teammates can act on
“Power Rune in twenty; push mid, support checks top, I hold the safer bottom route.”
“Top side unsafe; enemy support missing; keep the wave and deny the other route if shown.”
“Rune secured; use it for bottom pressure, then reset before their teleport response.”
“Leave Shrine—two enemies entered, our wave is exposed, trade the opposite lane.”
A useful call contains window + evidence + owner + action + cancel condition. “Rune soon” supplies only the first field.
Diagnose the first reason the rune route failed
Cue became command
The timer fired and the hero moved without pricing the lane, access, information, or next action.
Old schedule or location
A remembered interval, map position, Shrine behavior, or alternate-mode rule replaced the live client.
One-side tunnel vision
The player committed before checking whether the other route, ally, wave, denial, or trade was more reachable.
Pickup without conversion
The rune was collected but no lane, spell, movement, fight, farm, refill, defense, or reset used it.
Support tax ignored
Securing one window cost experience, a pull, ward timing, courier help, another lane, or the safety of a teammate.
No exit trigger
The hero stayed after the result, lost the wave, met the response, or turned a safe denial into a death.
Use official changes to keep the schedule honest

Value and contest rules kept moving
Valve’s 7.40 notes changed Bounty reward timing and Shrine terrain; 7.41 changed the Shrine contest countdown and experience behavior.
A focused rune-route replay drill
- Choose one window. Begin before preparation and stop after the result was used, denied, skipped, or lost.
- Record the live state. Clock, event type, lanes, health, mana, cooldowns, vision, shown and missing heroes, allies, route, and intended result.
- Mark the movement cost. Note the creeps, experience, farm, position, information, support job, or objective setup surrendered.
- Separate access from luck. Did the route create a safe decision even if the identity, side, contest, or result was unfavorable?
- Compare two options. Contest, deny, trade the other side, stay in lane, bring an ally, delay, use a summon, or skip.
- Create one trigger. Examples: “push before checking,” “name the use,” or “leave when the support disappears.”

What does DotaSense automate?
DotaSense can provide configurable audio and visual reminders for Water, Power, Bounty, and Shrine cycles. It does not read the map, reveal the rune, identify the spawn side, confirm a pickup, detect a contest, judge lane cost, or choose the next move.
