The current default toggle-overlay hotkey is Ctrl+Shift+O. Hotkeys are configurable in the desktop app and can fail when another application has already registered the same combination.

Does the overlay click or type into Dota 2?

The timer overlay window is configured as a non-focusable transparent display. Optional local input helpers are separate, disclosed workflows and are not required for the core timer overlay.

Dota 2 can take exclusive control of the display and hide a separate overlay. Audio alerts and global hotkeys may still work, but the visual layer is not reliable.

Test your actual setup.

GPU drivers, Windows versions, capture tools, HDR, resolution, scaling, and other overlays can change focus and layering behavior.

Start near the top center, then move only when it blocks the scoreboard, hero status, minimap, or combat space.

Check every display

A second monitor can use a different resolution, orientation, or Windows scale factor.

Save a stable position

The app remembers placement, so finish the monitor arrangement before calibrating the overlay.

Recheck the position after disconnecting a laptop, changing the primary monitor, rotating a display, or moving between 100% and higher Windows scaling. A valid old coordinate can be outside the current desktop.

Fix an overlay that is not showing

Switch from exclusive fullscreen to Borderless Window, then hide and show the overlay again.

The hotkey does nothing

Open Settings, confirm desktop integration is active, and assign a combination not already registered by another app.

The overlay is off-screen

Reconnect the previous display if practical, move the window back, or use the app's position controls to reset saved placement.

Placement changes between monitors

Check Windows scaling and which display is primary. Reposition after the final resolution and scale are active.

The visual is hidden but alerts continue

That can be expected: visual visibility, timer state, and sound state are separate controls.

Another overlay sits above it

Temporarily disable competing overlays to isolate the layer conflict, then re-enable them one at a time.

Run a pre-match overlay test

Open a lobby or Demo Hero. Do not learn the visibility controls during a live match.
Place the timer. Check the minimap, scoreboard, hero status, chat, and common fight area.
Toggle it twice. Confirm the configured hotkey hides and restores the correct surface.
Play one alert. Verify the output device, volume, and mute state.
Alt-Tab and return. Confirm focus and layering remain usable.
Keep an exit. Know how to hide the overlay immediately if it obstructs the match.
